In 2006 I wrote and directed this short film called "Shanks". The title was a play on words. Armitage Shanks are one of the largest manufacturers of toilets here in the UK and "shank" is also London slang for a knife - which plays a key part in the finale.

This was my first experience of writing a screenplay. The first draft was written using Microsoft Word and was formatted like a stage play thanks to my Drama & Theatre Studies training. Somehow with zero budget we managed to even shoot it on Mini DV and made a neat little short.

What was most surprising was how well this held up when I revisited it all these years later. Back then, I'd never read a thing about storytelling or screenwriting and yet it contained many key components of a real screenplay!

This was a fun screenplay to write and ultimately a fun movie to shoot. The 4th wall breaks were fun to play with to really draw the reader/viewer in to Rusty's chaotic experience in that toilet. I hope you'll have as much fun reading it as I did writing it.

Author's notes

In 2008 I wrote this dissertation as part of my Digital Film & Screen Arts course at the University for the Creative Arts.

It remains a reasonably solid examination of how a violent national history has bled in to the film-making of South Korean directors.

In this essay I make the case for Park chan-Wook being an auteur at the forefront of a Korean cinematic new wave. Some 15 years later this still seems to ring true, both for the director and the nation as a powerhouse in the landscape of cinema.

I have fond memories of writing this at a time when it was still the norm to spend hours in the university library delving in to academic texts as opposed to sourcing everything from the internet. If it's of interest to you I hope you have fun reading it. I've never made it publicly available but 15 years later I don't see any reason to keep it buried in an archive!
